Text, CNH Presents, Women in Ag. WHAT CREATED YOUR INTEREST IN AGRICULTURE? LILY COBO, PLANTER RESEARCH AGRONOMIST. Lily stands outside in front of agricultural machinery.
(SPEECH)
LILY COBO: Unlike a lot of people here at CNH, I actually did not grow up on a farm. I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago, so I really didn’t get much exposure to agriculture, and especially not as a career option. You kind of see farmers out in the field and know that they’re doing something out there with corn and soybeans.
But it was never something that was talked about as an option for when you grew up, you could be doing something in agriculture. I knew that I wanted to do something that involved working with my hands and working outside, and I only realized that agriculture could be incorporated into that when I decided to go to Iowa State University, where I started taking classes related to environmental science.
(DESCRIPTION)
Text, WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT CNH?
(SPEECH)
My job is very seasonal. So in the winter time, we’ll do a lot of the planning aspects. So I will solidify what sort of research plots we want to do. I’ll design the research plot.
When spring time rolls around, that’s really the busy season for me especially because everyone’s doing their planting in the spring time. This is when we’re actually going out to the fields that we’ve located and set up different cooperators with and actually plant the different research plots that we want to look at and collect data on.
And then during the summer, we’ll also do farm shows, but this is where a lot of the post-emergence data collection happens– all sorts of seed placement measurements that could impact your stand at the end of the season and your yield. And so then when the fall rolls around, that’s our harvest time, and so we’ll collect last bits of data that we need to really tell the full story of what we’re trying to convey to different teams.
(DESCRIPTION)
Text, ARE YOU HAPPY YOU CHOSE A CAREER IN AGRICULTURE?
(SPEECH)
Super glad to make it full circle. Go from realizing how fascinating and important agriculture is at Iowa State to coming back to the Farm Progress Show 2022 and be back here near Ames and my alma mater.
(DESCRIPTION)
Text, WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WOMEN CONSIDER AGRICULTURE FOR A CAREER?
(SPEECH)
Absolutely 100%. I would advise women to get into agriculture. I think that traditionally in the industry on farms in general, women have not been part of farming, and I think that we’ve been missing out on about 50% of the population being in this industry, which it would be great to incorporate.
And I think I’m becoming part of that. I think it’s getting a lot better with women becoming involved, and I think it’s a growing field. Everyone’s got to eat, so I think it’s going to be something that we’re always going to need a lot of help with. And for sure, for sure, reach out to people who can help you grow in the field.
